| Notes on loss | At 20.45 hours on 22 Jan, 1942, the Vassilios A. Polemis, a straggler from convoy ON-53, was hit amidships by one torpedo from U-333, broke in two and sank within 10 minutes. The Germans questioned the survivors and gave them bread and cigarettes. They apparently misunderstood the name and reported the sinking of the British steam merchant Burdwan (6069 grt). | ||
