| Notes on loss | At 05.47 hours on 29 Jan, 1943, U-255 fired one torpedo at a steamer, identified as Myronich class freighter (2274 grt) and observed it sinking by the bow 25 minutes after being hit south of the Bear Island. The ship had been missed with two torpedoes at 02.31 and 02.33 hours, possibly passing underneath the vessel. When the U-boat surfaced after five hours they still found survivors at the sinking position and tried to question them, but they only spoke Russian. Two Soviet freighters went missing in the Barents Sea in January 1943 and both were apparently sunk by U-255. The second ship sunk was probably the Ufa (Master L.I. Patrikeev) that had left Kola Inlet on 23 January and was reported missing thereafter. | ||
