Personal information

Kapitänleutnant Georg von Wilamowitz-Möllendorf was one of the oldest U-boat commanders of WWII to depart on patrol when he took his boat, the Milk Cow U-459, out from Helgoland, Germany on 29 March 1942. He was 48 years old at the time. He would bring his boat safely back to base on 5 patrols before being forced to scuttle on his 6th.

When his boat, the Milk Cow U-459, was fatally damaged by 2 Wellington aircraft (and 18 Germans from it dead already) Wilamowitz-Möllendorf ordered his men to abandon ship and saluted them as they rowed away in dinghies and went below to open the scuttling vents. He went down with this boat.

His men were picked up the Polish destroyer Orkan about 7 hours later.
